Phonal for Duo Signal

Work in Progress: Phonal (2025) – for Duo Signal
I have begun work on a new piece titled Phonal, composed for the Basel-based Duo Signal (Alejandro Oliván, saxophone, and Adrián Albaladejo Diaz, trombone).

Rooted in instinctive, introverted vocal actions, Phonal explores the primal drive to sound—an urge emerging before language, before culture. The piece investigates this phonal state through close collaboration with the performers, focusing on physical action as a generative force for sound. Rather than prescribing sonic outcomes, the score acts as a provocation for embodied expression—gestures that hover at the threshold of sound and movement. In Phonal, sound is not merely communicative, but existential: a resonance of being itself.

The work will develop through workshops and dialogue with Duo Signal in Basel and is planned to premiere in Basel, Switzerland during Autumn 2025.

Air, thick in circles for Atem Duo

A comission by Atem Duo, Sören Hermansson and Ivo Nilsson has resulted in the piece Air, thick in circles.

The piece explores the cyclical nature of performance, where playing and action merge into a continuous ritual. The work unfolds in distinct but interwoven sections:

First section introduces a space of near-silence—an atmosphere shaped by breath, motion, and the absence of a clear bell sound, with minimal voice.

Second section develops circular motion in both playing and the performer’s distance to the mouthpiece, creating long, evolving lines where action shifts, but continuity is maintained.

The final seciotn intensifies this approach, introducing a raw, screaming quality and a more prominent trombone solo, drawing from some earlier material for trombone solo while maintaining the circular structure.

At its core, the piece examines how music materializes in the act of bringing the instrument to the lips—where gesture and sound become inseparable.

The piece is planned to have it’s premiere later this year.

Chosen to represent Sweden during World New Music Days Festival in New Zeeland 2020

The orchestra piece Shouts has been chosen to represent Sweden in World New Music days 2020 in New Zeeland. A performance will be held in Auckland, New Zeeland during April 2020.

Shouts was premiered by Norrköpings Symphony Orchestra 2016, conducted by Michael Bartosch.

Residency in Villa San Michele

In august I will be working at Ville San Michelle in Capri, Italy on the next project No Drama. A larger piece for two singer, clarinet, trombone and violin with texts by My Roman Fagerlind.

The piece is to be performed at Sound of Stockholm festival the 21st November.

Latvia

My latest piece is to be performed Vasarnica Muzikas Festivals in Latvia with members from LSNO orchestra in August.

Residency in Centro Cultural el Silencio Vina del Mar, Chile

During the coming year I will do a residency in Vina Del Mar in Chile thanks to Konstnärsnämnden and Centro Cultural el Silencio.
