When “continuum” is mentioned in a musical context, one typically thinks of a continuous sound accompanied by an unbroken action that creates it. Regardless of the action, a transformation of sound into silence or into a contrasting sound would traditionally break that continuum—even if the action continues. The quality of the sounding material—and I would argue that silence or the absence of material—can also be part of a continuum. I investigate this in Billone’s music, particularly in Mani.Stereos. I attempt to reveal what in this piece may be understood as a continuum, and how it can be musically and conceptually meaningful—to me, and hopefully to others.
